The morganite gemstone belongs to the beryl mineral family, along with the emerald and aquamarine gemstones. The stone occurs naturally in a pink or orangish-pink hue. Deposits of morganite have been found in Madagascar, Brazil, Namibia, Afghanistan, and even in some parts of America.
Morganite ranks between 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness and is a popular choice for jewelry all over the world because of its durability and hence, it makes for great everyday wear as well as something for grander occasions.
Let’s dive a little deeper into why this gemstone is so popular:
A brief history
Morganite was named after J. P. Morgan, the famous financier. Mr. Morgan had offered financial support to his friend, George Kunz who discovered the stone in Madagascar in 1910. To honor his friend, Kunz proposed that the stone be named after him. It was in 1989 that the biggest ever piece of morganite was discovered in Maine, USA, weighing almost 50 pounds. This stone is known today as the “Rose of Maine”.
Stunning color
The mineral beryl is actually colorless. However, the gemstones that are a part of this family are quite colorful, and that is due to the presence of trace elements. While the emerald and aquamarine display a deep green and a light greenish-blue color, respectively, morganite is quite different. It is the trace amounts of manganese that give it a lovely, salmon pink hue.
Metaphysical properties
Morganite jewelry in the form of Morganite engagement rings, bracelets, pendants or any other form are incredibly popular because the precious stone represents sweetness, love and even romance. It is believed that this particular gemstone is connected directly to the heart and has healing properties. Additionally, the stone is also believed to offer compassion to its wearer.
