5 Simple Tests to Check The Quality of A Diamond

Buying diamond jewelry can be so much more than just about owning a sparkling accessory, it can be a substantial investment. For the untrained eye, telling a real diamond or gauging its quality isn’t easy. One can easily get sidelined by the likes of cubic zirconia or moissanite which may look just as dazzling but are far from being even close to the value of the real deal.

The Fog Test 

The fog test works on loose diamonds or on any piece of diamond jewelry. Breathe on the gemstone and you will see a light fog on the surface, like you would on glass. If it dissipates quickly, it’s a real diamond. 

The Mark 

A real diamond will have a laser engraving on the girdle (the thin perimeter around the diamond) with a number that corresponds to the number on its authentication certificate. This engraving can be identified using a magnifying glass. 

The UV Light Test

This particular test isn't considered 100% accurate, but can still be tried. Place the diamond gemstone or your diamond jewelry under UV light. Most, but not all, real diamonds will emit a blue glow. 

The Reading Test

If you place your diamond flat side down on a newspaper surrounded by ample light, you shouldn't be able to read the letters. However, if you can read the letters, the diamond is fake. This is primarily due to the fact that all facets of a real diamond will refract light in different directions. 

The Sparkle Test

The simplest test for checking whether your diamond is real or fake is how well it actually ‘sparkles’. The multiple facets of the diamond bounce around white light, which to the eye, appears as a sparkle. If you look closely, you will also see colorful light being reflected within the diamond, as compared to cubic zirconia, which will reflect oranges and blues for the most part.
