Did You Know This About Aquamarine Gems?

In News

The aquamarine gemstone has been popular since the time of the Romans and Greeks. For centuries, the stone was believed to have protective powers, especially for those working at sea, which is where the gemstone's name comes from.

It also has significant religious significance - The Christians shared similar beliefs as the Romans, while Buddhists believe it is an ideal gift for a spouse for a happy marriage. Did you know that Princess Diana’s aquamarine gemstone was repurposed into a ring for Meghan Markle by Prince Harry? Here’s some more interesting things you may not know about aquamarines: -

Distinct color

What sets this gemstone apart from the others is its distinctive blue-green color. That said, the stone does occur in a few other shades, ranging from a pale blue to a deep teal. The more intense the blue, the higher the stone’s value. Hence, a solid blue aquamarine is highly desired by customers. The color also lends itself well to metals such as white gold, like in our stunning aquamarine stud earrings.

Chatoyancy

The cabochon cut enhances the beauty of the gemstone further by allowing it to display this special property. Chatoyancy is when light reflects off the surface of the gem in a way that resembles the opening and shutting of a cat’s eye. This effect is best visible under direct light.

The Mohs Scale rating

Despite rating between 7 and 8 on the Mohs scale of hardness, aquamarine needs special care. If you own an aquamarine engagement ring, you might need to store it in a box without other, harder gemstones. A sharp, heavy blow or exposure to a high heat source might damage the aquamarine gemstone in your ring.

Global Occurrence

Another interesting fact about this precious stone is that it is mined all over the world. From Mozambique to Brazil, and from Pakistan to Colorado in the USA, many countries have deposits of beryl containing the aquamarine gemstone. Aquamarine has officially been Colorado’s state gemstone since 1971.
